The rule most orthodontists give is short: with aligners in, drink only plain water. Take them out for everything else. Here's why, and how to handle the everyday situations that make it tricky.

Why only water?

  • Food can crack or bend aligners, and chewing with them in doesn't work anyway.
  • Hot drinks can warp the plastic, so it no longer fits your teeth.
  • Sugary and acidic drinks get trapped. Aligners hold liquid against your teeth and limit saliva, which normally rinses teeth. That raises the risk of cavities and enamel erosion.
  • Colored drinks stain the plastic, making aligners less invisible.

Coffee and tea

Take your aligners out. If you drink coffee all morning, that can eat into your wear time, so try to have it in one sitting, ideally with a meal. Afterward, rinse your mouth with water (or brush) before putting the aligners back in. If you can't give up the slow sip, talk to your orthodontist rather than drinking with aligners in.

Alcohol

Take your aligners out for wine, beer, and cocktails. They stain and contain sugar or acid. Keep your case with you at events so the aligners don't end up in a napkin, and rinse with water before putting them back in. Long nights out are one of the biggest threats to wear time, so keep an eye on how long they're out.

Gum and mints

Don't chew gum with aligners in. It sticks to the plastic. Sucking on mints or candy with aligners in bathes your teeth in sugar, so skip that too.

Snacking

Snacking is where wear time disappears. Each snack means taking aligners out, eating, cleaning up, and putting them back in. Try to:

  • Eat in two or three proper meals rather than grazing
  • Combine a snack with a meal break instead of a separate removal
  • Keep meal breaks to about 30–45 minutes

After you eat

  1. Brush your teeth, or at least rinse your mouth well with water if you can't brush.
  2. Rinse the aligners.
  3. Put them back in right away.

A travel toothbrush and your case in your bag make this easy anywhere. The cleaning guide has the full routine.

What about food choices?

Once your aligners are out, you can eat what you normally eat. That's one of the big advantages over braces. In the first days of a new tray, softer foods are more comfortable while teeth are tender.

Track it instead of guessing

TrackMyAligners logs your wear time with one tap, reminds you when aligners are out too long, and tells you when to switch trays. Free on iPhone.

The bottom line

Water only with aligners in, everything else with them out. Keep meals and drinks to defined breaks, clean up before putting aligners back in, and your teeth and wear time will both stay on track.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drink coffee with my aligners in?

It's best not to. Hot coffee can warp the plastic and stain it, and any sugar or milk gets trapped against your teeth. Take the aligners out, drink your coffee, rinse, and put them back in.

Can I drink alcohol with aligners?

Take your aligners out first. Wine, beer, and cocktails can stain the aligners and contain sugar or acid that shouldn't sit against your teeth. Rinse your mouth with water before putting them back in.

Can I chew gum with aligners in?

No. Gum sticks to the aligners and can damage them. Chew it only with aligners out, then clean up before putting them back in.

Can I drink through a straw with aligners in?

A straw doesn't make sugary or acidic drinks safe, because liquid still reaches your teeth under the aligners. With aligners in, stick to plain water.

Is sparkling water okay with aligners?

Plain, unflavored sparkling water is sometimes considered okay, but it's mildly acidic, so many providers prefer still water. Flavored or sweetened sparkling drinks should wait until your aligners are out.
